Mark Weiland is a scientist with over 30 years of experience working in the streams, lakes, and rivers of North America, which includes 28 years in the Pacific Northwest and Federal Columbia River Power System. His technical expertise includes developing new monitoring technologies, leading multidisciplinary research teams, and conducting evaluations in aquatic environments using state-of-the-art technologies—especially in the hydroelectric industry with a focus on fish passage. Mark is a regional expert in active and passive acoustics, acoustic telemetry, and acoustic and optical cameras in modified systems. He was and is integral to the development of several technologies, ranging from the Juvenile Salmonid Acoustic Telemetry System (JSATS) to a Low-Cost Sonar System (in development), and frequently conducts training for external and internal parties on these systems’ principles and best practices.

Mark obtained his Master of Science in Fisheries Science and Management at the University of Missouri-Columbia and holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. He lives with his wife in the Columbia River Gorge, balancing visiting his children as they start their own careers, outdoor recreation, and keeping elk from harvesting their garden. Mark is recognized as a leader in his community, volunteering as a search/rescue diver for Skamania County Sheriff’s Office for almost 30 years.
