Science & Data Solutions
Alexander Smith is an environmental and carbon scientist with nearly 10 years of experience in wetland and coastal ecosystem research. His expertise ranges from modeling salt marsh biogeochemistry and sediment dynamics to organizing field campaigns exploring carbon dynamics in the coastal forests. Alexander’s passion for environmental problems has taken him from the wetlands of the Pacific Northwest to the salt marshes of the Chesapeake Bay. He is skilled in analytical techniques in R, FORTRAN, and MATLAB as well as study design implementation and a variety of field sampling techniques.
Alexander received his Ph.D. in Marine Science with a focus on coastal carbon dynamics from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science at William & Mary. He also holds a B.S. in Environmental Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He completed a postdoctoral joint-appointment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center. Alexander is based in Chicago and when he isn’t wrangling his two cats, Sophie and Gabbagool, he and his partner are often out hiking, kayaking, reading, and dancing
